Washington, D.C. – Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) testified Wednesday before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Federal Lands in favor of designating the Apostle Islands as America’s next national park.
“I am strongly in favor of Congressman Tiffany’s legislation to bring the status of a national park to Wisconsin,” Quinn said. “That’s why I made the trip to Washington to show just how important a national park will mean to our region’s economy and preserving this national wonder permanently.”
Quinn’s testimony to the subcommittee included the following excerpts:
“Known as the crown jewels of Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands are a treasured natural resource in Wisconsin and for the nation, for the residents of our region but also for the countless visitors who come to experience their pristine beauty, scenery and wildlife, and outdoor activities.
“National parks are renowned for attracting visitors from every state who wish to see the natural beauty the American landscape has to offer. Transforming the Apostle Islands into a national park will allow visitors that opportunity by preserving the Apostle Islands and providing benefits that align with the values of our community.”
“The designation of the Apostle Islands as a national park will have a positive impact on our local economy, bringing more visitors to the area who contribute to local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, shops, and recreational services. Increased tourism will create new job opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and support the livelihoods of many residents in the Bayfield area and beyond. For example, a National Park Service study found that communities within 60 miles of a national park saw an average increase in tourism spending by 14%, with related job growth of 11%.”
There are currently 63 national parks in the United States, but Wisconsin does not have such a designation within its borders. In 1970, the Apostle Islands were recognized as a National Lakeshore, comprised of 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland shore.
“It was an honor to testify in our nation’s capital before a subcommittee chaired by Congressman Tiffany,” Quinn said. “I am optimistic that our federal officials will look favorably on this proposal and recommend the bill move forward.”
The legislation authored by Tiffany was introduced as the “Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve Act.”
Quinn also reflected on testifying the same day that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to a joint session of Congress.
“After watching Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech I am reminded how blessed we are to live in America,” Quinn said. “With all of the recent news developments at the national and international level, it was an extraordinary and eye opening time to visit Washington and speak with federal officials.”
