Sam Lawton Emerges As Sole Contender For Barron County Judge In Unopposed Bid

BARRON COUNTY -- In a surprising turn of events, only one candidate has filed the necessary paperwork to be on the ballot for the upcoming April election for Barron County Judge. Attorney Sam Lawton, who declared his candidacy on October 3, 2023, will be running unopposed for the position, according to tracking from the Wisconsin Election Commission (WEC).

The Barron County Judge position became vacant following the retirement of Judge Mike Bitney on September 15, 2023. Governor Tony Evers initiated a search for a replacement in May of 2023, with the original application deadline set for June 23. However, the process faced multiple extensions, with the final announcement stating that applications would be accepted on a rolling basis until the vacancy was filled.

Despite initial reports of at least five candidates participating in remote interviews, Sam Lawton emerged as the sole candidate on the April ballot after the January 2, 2024 deadline for filing the necessary paperwork passed. With no opposition in the election, Lawton is poised to become Barron County’s third Judge.

The prolonged vacancy of the Judge position has raised concerns within the community, as Barron County operates with a three-Judge system. The absence of one Judge for an extended period has created challenges for the local judicial system. DrydenWire previously reported on the uncertainty surrounding the appointment, as Governor Evers' interview panel did not find a suitable candidate from the initial pool.

Speculations arise on whether Governor Evers will appoint Sam Lawton before the April election or wait until after. If appointed before the election, Lawton could assume his duties earlier, benefiting the Barron County judicial system. However, if the appointment is delayed, Lawton would have to wait until August 2024 to officially start his role as Judge.

The Barron County community awaits further developments, with the April 2nd election set to determine the county's next Judge.
