Rusk County Legislator Honored For Advocacy In Support Of Veterans

MADISON – During their annual convention on Saturday, July 13th, the American Legion – Department of Wisconsin recognized, Representative James Edming (R-Glen Flora) as their “Legislator of the Year”.

“The prestigious Wisconsin American Legion Legislator of the Year Award was presented to Representative James Edming for his support and advocacy on a number of pieces of legislation supporting Veterans, their families, and the community,” said Department Commander Jim Johnson.

This session Rep. Edming served as the chairman of the Assembly Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs. The committee approved several important pieces of legislation including one to remove barriers to hiring direct care staff at our state’s veterans homes and another to make it easier for veterans spouses to access care at these facilities.

“During my time in the Legislature I made it my goal to advocate for our veterans and their families whenever possible,” said Rep. Edming. “While I didn’t do so for personal recognition, it is still a tremendous honor to receive this award from the American Legion.”

Rep. Edming was also the lead author of legislation to expand the eligibility for the Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit. This proposal went further than ever before this session when it was approved on the Assembly floor unanimously, 96-0 back in February. However, Senate leadership did not bring it up for a vote before the legislative session ended.

“Seeing this legislation come so far but still fall short was painful because I know it would make a big difference for many Wisconsin veterans,” said Rep. Edming. “It was an honor to work with the American Legion and other veterans groups on this proposal. While I’m retiring from the Legislature, I’m confident some of my colleagues will pick up where I left off and get it to the governor’s desk.”

The 87th Assembly District includes all or portions of Marathon, Rusk, Sawyer and Taylor Counties.
