“Kids are out of school, and summer is here! If you’re anything like me, the next few months will be spent with family and friends, enjoying all of Wisconsin’s outdoor opportunities throughout our great state. Wisconsin has no shortage of activities for residents and visitors to enjoy. There are countless miles of trails for hiking and biking across the state; you can travel along 169 miles of the St. Croix River by canoe or kayak or explore our wonderful local towns and cities in the area.
As a member of the Committee on Tourism, I am proud that in the 2021 - 2023 biennial budget, the Legislature provided over $1.5 million for marketing Wisconsin as a travel destination to other states and Wisconsnities within our state. These funds will help research and plan marketing to encourage Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Missouri residents to travel to Wisconsin. This investment will go a long way in telling residents from Wisconsin and other Midwestern states about the diverse opportunities for recreational and tourism we offer. Attracting more out-of-state tourism will undoubtedly contribute more to our state’s existing $21 billion tourism industry.
We also recognized the importance of Wisconsin’s outdoor recreation industry by re-authorizing the Office of Outdoor Recreation. These funds will ensure it can continue connecting businesses within the industry and promoting Wisconsin’s outdoor recreational opportunities. As one of the top states in the nation for outdoor-recreation manufacturing, the partnerships created through this Office still strengthen an industry that contributes nearly $8 billion to Wisconsin’s economy and provides thousands of jobs in our state.
I am proud of the many investments the Legislature made this session, especially those that will ensure our state continues to grow as a tourist destination for anyone. Wisconsin summers are always great for families and friends to enjoy our state’s natural beauty; I hope to see you at one of the many festivals, fairs, or events around our community.
