MADISON -- Representative James Edming (R-Glen Flora) voted in favor of Assembly Bill (AB) 336. This bill will encourage unemployed individuals to return to work by ending Wisconsin’s participation in the temporary federal unemployment benefit programs.
“As our economy continues to rebound, I am hearing from employers across the 87th Assembly district who are struggling to find enough employees to meet their needs,” said Rep. Edming. “This shortage of workers is putting increased stress on those who are working in the form of longer hours and fewer days off.”
AB 336 ends Wisconsin’s participation in the following federal programs:
- Pandemic unemployment assistance (PUA) program
- Pandemic Emergency Unemployment compensation (PEUC) program
- Federal pandemic unemployment compensation (FPUC) program
- Mixed earner unemployment compensation (MEUC) program
The federal supplement provides an additional $300 per week on top of state benefits. Currently, 25 other states have opted out of the federal programs, which are set to expire in September.
“With so many jobs available around the 87th District and across Wisconsin, it just does not make sense to continue providing increased unemployment benefits that encourage people to remain on the sidelines instead of re-entering the workforce,” said Rep. Edming. “To keep our economic recovery going it is essential to get more people back to work.”
The 87th Assembly District includes portions of Clark, Marathon, Rusk, Sawyer, and Taylor Counties.
