MADISON, WI – Today the Assembly passed two proposals that will protect Wisconsin consumers’ right to buy cars, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and other devices regardless of their energy source.
Assembly Bill 141 prohibits the state and local governments from restricting the sale or use of devices based on their energy sources. Similarly, Assembly Bill 142 prohibits government restrictions on the sale or use of motor vehicles based on their energy sources.
“Some states, like California, are considering bans on the sale of gas-powered vehicles in the next few years,” State Rep. Dave Armstrong (R-Rice Lake) explained. “Other states, including our neighbors in Minnesota, are reviewing proposals to ban gas-powered lawn equipment.
“I recognize the advances that electric vehicles are making, and there are people for whom electric vehicles and other devices make sense. At the same time, there other people – particularly in rural areas – for whom gas-powered vehicles and lawn equipment are the best or most reliable options. As technology evolves, consumer preferences may change, too, and the free market will reflect such developments. We don’t need state or local governments to impose one-size-fits-all solutions. That’s why I voted for AB 141 and AB 142.”
AB 141 and AB 142 will now go to the Senate for further consideration.
Also on Tuesday’s floor calendar, the Assembly voted to concur in Senate Bill 76, which strengthens Wisconsin’s carjacking laws. Senate Bill 76 will go to Governor Evers for his review.
