MADISON, WI -- The Assembly has passed legislation that protects parents’ rights to direct their children’s education and health free from government infringement.
Assembly Bill 510 recognizes “the fundamental right of parents to direct the upbringing, education, health care, and mental health of their children” unless the government, including school districts, can demonstrate a compelling interest of the highest order that is narrowly tailored and uses the least restrictive means. AB 510 also lists a number of specific rights while recognizing that parents have rights beyond those spelled out in law.
“Parents should have the right to raise their children as they see fit, without undue interference from the state, school district, or other governments,” State Rep. Dave Armstrong (R-Rice Lake) said. “Values begin in the home, and parents need to be able to know what their children are being taught.”
The Assembly also concurred in a proposal to protect the privacy of firearm purchasers and owners.
“Senate Bill 466 strengthens Wisconsin residents’ Second Amendment rights,” Representative Armstrong said. “It prohibits the Wisconsin Department of Justice and other government entities from compiling lists of firearm owners. SB 446 also includes language to protect firearm or ammunition purchasers from discrimination by payment card networks or issuers.”
AB 510 will now go to the Senate for further consideration, while SB 446 will go to Governor Evers for his approval.
