After the Legislature passed the 2023-2024 state budget last week, it went to Governor Evers for his consideration. The Governor signed the bulk of the budget into law on July 5, but he also made 51 partial vetoes.
State Rep. Dave Armstrong (R-Rice Lake) issued the following statement:
“Unfortunately for Wisconsin families, Governor Evers used his veto pen to reduce the $3.5 billion of income tax cuts to only $175 million. While households in the two lowest brackets will still see the cuts the Legislature approved, households earning more than $36,840 will not. So much for the middle class.
“The Governor’s original budget plan - to raise taxes by $2 billion - would have been an insult to Wisconsin residents and businesses. His decision to slash the Legislature’s tax cuts by 95% may be even worse. Once again, he has made it clear that he thinks he knows better than you to how to spend your money.
“Similarly, the Governor is trying his hardest to increase property taxes. Thanks to him playing veto games with per-pupil school funding provisions, Wisconsin residents may see enormous increases through the year 2425. I wish that was a typo, but it’s not.
“Needless to say, I will work with my legislative colleagues to attempt to override or undo these and other egregious veto decisions.”
