Madison, Wis. – [Tuesday] on the floor of the State Senate, Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) voted for new investments that support working families and strengthen our state’s economy.
Today’s legislation (Special Session Senate Bill 1) addresses Wisconsin’s childcare shortage, expands the Child Care and Dependent tax credit, provides a $2.2 billion middle class tax cut, and reforms Wisconsin’s occupational licensure and welfare programs.
“Wisconsin families are struggling with the costs of inflation and child care. The plan I voted for today will allow a family of four with two children in child care to earn a total tax credit of up to $5,200,” Quinn said. “The plan also provides meaningful tax relief – the average family would receive an additional $600 tax cut. That’s real money for working families in our community.”
The Senate also acted on Quinn’s “Embrace Them Both” bills that emphasize care for families just starting out. Senate Bill 345 funds pregnancy resource centers which offer a multitude of critical services to vulnerable mothers and fathers, including free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, prenatal and parenting classes, STD testing and education, family planning and education, pregnancy counseling, adoption support, and miscarriage and stillbirth support.
“There are more than 60 pregnancy resource centers throughout the state which are phenomenal assets to communities and open to anyone who is worried or anxious about an expected or unexpected pregnancy,” Quinn said. “There’s growing demand for these services and my legislation aims to further support this important work.”
Senate Bill 346 offers financial assistance to families seeking adoption. Families considering adoption sometimes stop the process or withdraw from consideration because they cannot afford it. The bill allows families to receive up to $10,000 to defray adoption expenses.
“If a woman chooses to place her child for adoption, there should be no doubt that there is a family ready and able to raise the child,” Quinn said. “This bill will help ensure that cost is not a barrier for children to enter a loving home.”
Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) represents the 25th Senate District, which includes all of Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Barron, and Price Counties, and significant portions of Sawyer County.
