Polk County Seeks To Update Ordinances

POLK COUNTY — The Polk County Environmental Services Committee debated updates to the Polk County Code of Ordinances at their January 15th meeting. Discussion regarding the updates will be ongoing throughout early 2025.

The committee will be examining the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requirements and other state standards and discussing changes that can be made to bring the County into greater consistency and alignment with those bodies. Polk County recognizes that compliance with the DNR’s requirements is not only a legal obligation but also an essential step in safeguarding the county’s natural environment and the health of its water bodies. The proposed updates include changes to the Polk County Code of Ordinances regarding shoreline protection, general zoning, and subdivisions.

The county board establishes policy by approving ordinances. Ordinances are local laws prescribing rules of conduct and are enforced by county officials. Ordinances become a permanent part of the governmental code and may be amended from time to time. Once policy has been approved by the county board of supervisors through plans, budgets, ordinances, and resolutions, it is the responsibility of county staff to implement the decisions of the board.

The committee will continue to debate updates during their February 5th meeting, and anticipates holding an additional meeting on February 19th for information and discussion with all interested parties on the proposed changes and a public hearing on the proposed changes in March.

Interested parties can appear in person at either of the meetings or the public hearing to voice their support or opposition to the changes.

They may also write or email their public comments for consideration by the committee.
