POLK COUNTY — A tragic collision occurred at the intersection of State Highway 63 and 60th Avenue, just north of the Village of Clear Lake, according to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 4:55 PM, the Polk County Sheriff's Office Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call of a car vs semi crash at the intersection of State Highway 63 and 60th Avenue, North of the Village of Clear Lake.
A passenger car with three occupants, was traveling westbound on 60th Avenue and failed to stop for a stop sign. The passenger car travelled into the path of a semi tanker truck traveling northbound on Highway 63. The tanker containing diesel fuel and gasoline overturned into the west ditch. The driver of the passenger car was air ambulanced from the scene and later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. Another passenger was flown from Amery Hospital and is listed in critical condition. The third person from the car was transported to Amery Hospital and is listed in stable condition. The driver of the Semi Truck was not seriously injured.
The responding fire departments were able to contain the leak from the tanker truck.
Highway 63 remained closed overnight to make efforts to pump out the fuel from the tanker and treat a minor spill.
Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Clear Lake Fire, Clayton Fire, Clear Lake Ambulance, Northwestern Municipal EMS, Life Link Air Ambulance, Clear Lake Police, Amery Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Polk County Highway Department for their assistance with the crash.
The name of the fatal victim will be released at a later time. Highway 63 is now open.
This crash remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
