Polk County Announces Launch Of New 3D GIS Application For Public Access To LiDAR Data

POLK COUNTY, WI -- The Polk County Land Information Department is excited to announce the launch of a new, interactive, 3D web-based GIS application that allows the public to explore LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data collected in the County. The platform, which is now available to anyone with an internet connection, provides a user-friendly way to view elevation map records obtained through the U.S. Geological Survey’s 3D Elevation Program project in 2022.

The new application offers a range of features designed to make understanding and analyzing Polk County’s topography easier than ever before. Users can explore elevation models, 1-foot contour lines, classified point clouds, and measure elevation distances in a simple browser-based interface. Now, whether on a desktop, tablet, or mobile device, the application brings an in-depth view of the county’s diverse landscape directly to users' fingertips.

“We are pleased to release a new interactive application that provides access to elevation data,” said Brad Runeberg, Polk County GIS Coordinator. “LiDAR data has been regarded as the most accurate and authoritative source of elevation information. Users’ will enjoy the 3D map perspective and using the measurement and elevation profile tools. Our goal is to bring valuable resources to our stakeholders to analyze and make better decisions.”
