PHONE SCAM: Sheriff Says Caller Identifies Themselves As Law Enforcement Deputy; Requests Payment For Warrants

POLK COUNTY -- The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says they are receiving information about a scam where someone is calling identifying themselves as a Deputy, and requesting payment for warrants. The suspect requests payment in the form of gift cards.

“This is a scam,” says Polk County Sheriff Brent Waak. Sheriff Waak advises that you do not provide any information or payments and to notify Law Enforcement if you receive a call.

“We ask that if you get a similar call, document the phone numbers and call your local Law Enforcement agency to file a report.”

Sheriff Waak also reminds the community that Deputies and Local Law Enforcement will never take a direct payment by phone, “this is an attempted fraud.”
