BURNETT COUNTY (DrydenWire) – Burnett County Circuit Court Judge Melissia Mogen has rejected a plea agreement that was reached in the case filed against Michael Winquist, age 30, following a shooting incident in May 2024 during which Winquist shot a person, then told a child at the residence to phone law enforcement, and then shot himself.
Online court records indicate that Judge Mogen addressed the proposed plea agreement during multiple court hearings, questioning Burnett County District Attorney Kevin Schmidt and the defense counsel for Winquist, former Washburn County Judge Eugene Harrington, as to whether the agreement was in the public interest.
The case against Winquist, charging him with Attempt First Degree Intentional Homicide, multiple counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Operating a Firearm While Intoxicated, is scheduled for a Jury Trial in October 2025.
