Northwood Tech Students Experience Success At Wisconsin SkillsUSA

Northwood Technical College’s construction and cabinetmaking students recently competed at the SkillsUSA Wisconsin State Leadership and Skills Conference held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on April 9-10. Eight students from the College competed in cabinetmaking and construction categories this year with two qualifying for Nationals.

“This year’s state SkillsUSA was a huge success. We had eight students competing in construction and cabinetmaking, and of those eight students, we had a total of four medals. In the carpentry competition, we swept the podium with first, second, and third place, as well as fourth and fifth place. We also took first place in cabinetmaking,” stated Scott Theilig, construction and cabinetmaking instructor at Northwood Tech.

Northwood Tech’s SkillsUSA Wisconsin results:

  • Braydon Ahlberg, carpentry, fifth place
  • Hunter Degerstrom, cabinetmaking, first place
  • Bryce Keilholtz, carpentry, fourth place
  • Carson Knutson, carpentry, first place
  • Theodore Lund, cabinetmaking, fourth place
  • Benjamin Mayer, carpentry, third place
  • Owen Meurett, cabinetmaking, fifth place
  • Trent Pritzl, carpentry, second place

“In late June, two of our construction and cabinetmaking program students, Hunter Degerstrom and Carson Knutson, will be representing Wisconsin in both occupational fields against competitors from the other states at the National SkillsUSA competition being held in Atlanta on June 24-28. This is Carson’s second attempt at a medal in carpentry at the national level as he placed sixth in the nation for 2023. This is Hunter’s first attempt at the national cabinetmaking competition," added Theilig.

As the national competition approaches, the anticipation and excitement among the Northwood Tech community will continue to grow. Preparations are now underway for the Northwood Tech students to showcase their skills on a national stage. Their dedication and hard work exemplify the high standards and commitment to excellence that define Northwood Tech's construction and cabinetmaking program.
