New Events And Activities Happening At The Spooner Civic Center And Hanks

WASHBURN COUNTY -- The Spooner Civic Center has once again began a journey of growth!

Purchased by the Hansen family and close friend, Troy Johnson, The Spooner Civic Center and Hank's Up North Bar and Grill is headed in a great direction!

Rick, the operations manager of the center and is a man of many talents. Rick has big goals for each area of the building to be open and buzzing with excitement year round! He has already put them to action, bringing in college hockey teams, events, hauling in over 100 pair of rental skates and more!


The walking track is open and free for the month of December! Doors are typically open from 8am-8pm. Walking classes are on Monday and Friday mornings at 9:30 am with warm up and stretching led by Deb Nebel (free through December)! There is also an open walking class on Wednesdays from 8am-noon!

Rick and Angela (Hank's manager and assistant to Spooner Civic Center) have set goals to open the "Turf Room" and 24 hour Gym in 2019. They are determined and aiming to have the gym open January 2nd, 2019! Many classes are already underway! Zumba is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tai Chi is going and Deb Nebel’s walking class.

Skate rental is now available, along with skate sharpening! The open skate program is seeing tremendous growth and Rick has added additional open skate times- Wednesdays 4pm-6pm, Saturdays 6pm-9pm and Sundays 3:30pm-6:30pm. The Learn To Skate program is booming, which is offered by SAYHA Friday nights at 5:45 pm. He and Angela have put together a party package for ten kids to skate and have a meal at Hank's for a very affordable cost. Just some of the things they are considering for the future is yoga, tumbling, self defense classes, dance and more. The goal of the new Civic Center is to work together with the community to make the Spooner Civic Center and Hanks the monument it was originally intended to be.


The Spooner Civic Center is opening up advertising space to local businesses who would like to to join in their mission and sponsor the building to help keep costs low and to help support the Northwoods Figure Skating Club and SAYHA!

The powerhouse responsible for much of the energy in the new complex is Angela Rew.


Her current titles include manager, marketing, and event coordinator. Hank’s is set to start brunch January 12th and opening for lunch the following week (Monday January 14th). The party room attached to Hank’s is now appropriately titled “The Penalty Box” and is open for reservations for parties up to 125 people. The room already has bookings well into April 2019. They are planning live music, Karaoke, and bar bingo in the near future. The original indoor pool is going to be filled with cement and covered with turf. The Turf Room will be available for playing soccer, golf, and events yet to be scheduled.The large banquet hall is open upstairs with professional catering supplied by chef, Phil Dvorak.

Santa is coming to the Spooner Civic Center for a special Skate with Santa evening on this coming Friday December 14th at 5:30pm for Learn To Skate kids and 6:00pm for general public. Skating with Santa is $5 and skate rentals are available for an additional $5. Learn to skate member admission is free. Santa will then come off the ice at 6:30pm and head through Hank’s to say Merry Christmas! Parents are welcome to take free pictures!
