Multiple Events In Spooner Scheduled To Send Off Troops To Middle East

SPOONER, WI -- According to Lisa Powers, the Washburn County Veterans Service Officer, the public is cordially invited to attend several events sending off the local 150 soldiers of the 829th Engineering Vertical Construction Company to Afghanistan.

The first event will take place on Thursday, Oct 17 at 10a at the Spooner Armory. It's a meet and greet with the troops and light refreshments will be served.

The second event will be held on Saturday, Oct 19. This time at the Spooner High School at 11a. Where an official Deployment Ceremony will be held for the soldiers. This is a Formal Program and the community is invited. Over 1000 plus people are anticipated to attend.

Sunday, Oct 20 is the official Send-Off Parade starting at 10a from the Spooner Armory as the Spooner troops will be joined by two other groups of soldiers. The troops will head west on Hwy 70 and turning north on Hwy 63.

This is the opportunity for the community to support the deploying soldiers with signs, flags, and banners while standing on the street sides of Hwy. 70 and Hwy 63.

There will NOT be on ceremony on Friday, Oct 18, due to a lack of parking at the Armory that would not be able to accommodate the community and the soldier's families due to the inclusion of the Ashland soldiers presence.

Donations for all of the light refreshments are needed and can be dropped off at the Veteran's Service Office, 1600 Cty Hwy H in Spooner.

If anyone wishes to donate by mail, Lisa would like the letters MCVSO to be written on the memo line, and the checks made out to Veterans Donation Fund. All donations are tax deductible.

For further information, or to sign up to help serve the refreshments, call the office Monday through Thursday during working hours at 715-635-4470.
