Trump Takes A Hit In New Jersey: 5 Takeaways From Tuesday’s Primaries

A number of states held primaries for races up and down the ballot Tuesday, with President Biden and Donald Trump inching ever closer to their respective nominations and a couple notable Senate matchups solidifying.

Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and Washington, D.C., held some of the last presidential primaries of the cycle. Guam and the Virgin Islands will officially cap off the presidential primary on Saturday, when they both hold their Democratic contests.

But Tuesday night also featured other prominent primaries.

Here are five takeaways from the Tuesday primaries.

Biden Announces Asylum Restrictions To ‘Control Border’

President Joe Biden has issued a sweeping executive order aimed at curbing record migrant arrivals at the US-Mexico border that have left him politically vulnerable in an election year.

Under the order, which took effect at midnight, officials can quickly remove migrants entering the US illegally without processing their asylum requests.

Hunter's First Felony Trial Becomes Biden V. Biden

Hunter Biden's legal team signaled Tuesday that his federal trial on three gun charges won't just be the U.S. v. Biden — it'll also be Biden v. Biden.

With Bidens likely to testify for both the prosecution and the defense, the trial is set to further divide parts of the family that fractured after the death of President Biden's other son, Beau, in 2015.

AT&T Says It Has Resolved Nationwide Issue Affecting Ability Of Customers To Make Calls

AT&T on Tuesday evening said it had resolved an issue preventing customers from completing calls placed to non-AT&amT customers across the U.S.

The telecommunications company earlier Tuesday confirmed there was "a nationwide issue that is affecting the ability of customers to complete calls between carriers. The carriers are working as quickly as possible to diagnose and resolve the issue," the carrier stated in a post on X.

NASA To Change How It Points Hubble Space Telescope

After completing a series of tests and carefully considering the options, NASA announced Tuesday work is underway to transition its Hubble Space Telescope to operate using only one gyroscope (gyro). While the telescope went into safe mode May 24, where it now remains until work is complete, this change will enable Hubble to continue exploring the secrets of the universe through this decade and into the next, with the majority of its observations unaffected.

Wisconsin Attorney General Files Felony Charges Against Attorneys, Political Aide In 2020 Trump Fake Electors Scheme

Felony forgery charges were filed in Wisconsin on June 4 against two attorneys and an aide who helped submit paperwork falsely saying that former President Donald Trump had won the battleground state in 2020.

The state charges are the first to come in Wisconsin and follow separate charges brought in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Georgia related to the fake electors scheme.

More Than Two Dozen Assembly Members Draw Primary Challengers

More than two dozen members of the Assembly face primary challenges this fall, according to filings with the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

By comparison, just seven incumbents drew primary challengers in 2022, though none was successful in beating GOP lawmakers.

Candidates faced a 5 p.m. deadline yesterday to turn in their nomination papers with enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. The Elections Commission will then meet a week from today to consider which candidates met the requirements to qualify for the ballot.

2 Months After Hospital Closures, Eau Claire Area Task Force Ends Work

A community task force created to respond to the abrupt closure of several Eau Claire area hospitals and clinics has ended its work this week.

The Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce formed the recovery task force in late January after Hospital Sisters Health System and Prevea Health announced they would be closing all of their locations in western Wisconsin.

HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls closed on March 22, while most primary and specialty care clinics closed in late April.

For the first time in more than a decade, Democrats in key battleground state Wisconsin have a chance at wresting some legislative control from Republicans thanks to Gov. Tony Evers’ new district maps.

Republicans will likely retain their majority in the Senate in November’s elections. But redrawn districts coupled with retirements have left almost two-thirds of the Assembly’s seats open in the 2024 election cycle, giving Democrats their best shot at taking control of that chamber in a generation.
