At Least 6 Killed In Shooting At Fourth Of July Parade In Highland Park, Illinois

Six people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, and more than two dozen people were taken to area hospitals with injuries, officials said. Some of the victims, including at least one child, were in critical condition when they were transported from the scene, Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage told reporters.

Robert "Bobby" Crimo III, who had been identified as a person of interest, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. local time, nearly nine hours after the shooting. Officials said his vehicle was spotted and he was stopped after a brief pursuit. He is being taken to the Highland Park Police Department as the investigation continues.

Newsom Pardons Woman Who Killed Sex Trafficker, Spent Decades Behind Bars

California Gov. Gavin Newsom last week pardoned Sara Kruzan, a victim of teen sex trafficking who spent nearly two decades in prison after she killed her abuser and has since become a national advocate for prison reform.

Kruzan was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in September 1995 for killing George Gilbert Howard as he attempted to sexually assault her. Howard sex trafficked her for years, starting when she was a teenager.

Kruzan was tried as an adult at age 16.

Brittney Griner Asks Biden To Help Get Her Out Of Russia In Handwritten Letter

Brittney Griner personally reached out to President Joe Biden, urging him to help get her out of Russian custody, according to her representatives.

A handwritten letter from Griner, portions of which were made public, was delivered to the White House on Monday. In it, she expressed fears she will be held in Russia "forever."

China Lambasts NASA Claim It May Take Over The Moon

China has criticised warnings from the chief of NASA that claimed Beijing may take over the moon as part of a military space programme.

Zhao Lijian, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, told reporters on Monday that China firmly opposed NASA Administrator Bill Nelson’s “irresponsible remarks”.

Wisconsin’s governor worries that colleges such as UW-La Crosse will be affected by a new decision from the state Supreme Court.

Democratic Governor Tony Evers is upset with the court ruling which declared that a Scott Walker appointee to the DNR board can stay on the board indefinitely. Evers says the Republican-run Senate has been keeping his nominees off the UW Board of Regents.

“I have 9 of the 11 Board of Regents that have not been appointed,” says the governor. “And when, if for some odd reason, a Republican is in my position in a couple months, all those people will be gone.”

More Organizations Starting The Work Of Tackling Racism

A growing number of groups have signed on to a Wisconsin Public Health Association resolution to recognize racism as a public health crisis.

Endorsing the resolution means organizations are admitting to the role racism plays in public health outcomes like low birthweights for people of color in Wisconsin but also other areas, like housing and employment, that can contribute to inequitable health outcomes. It also encourages organizations to take action to eliminate racism in their practices.

Former Green Bay Prison Guard Accused Of Hate Crime Could Accept Plea Deal

A former Green Bay Correctional Institutional officer, Shane Nolan, could accept a plea deal Tuesday morning. His charges of felony substantial battery and disorderly conduct with hate crime modifiers could be reduced.

Nolan is accused of throwing Dessiray Koss into a fire pit during a bonfire party at her home on July 3, 2021 after midnight.

According to a criminal complaint, Nolan and a friend were invited to Koss’s home by her sister after spending time at a Green Bay bar.

Wisconsin Athlete Making Waves As A Competitive Water Skier

At just 18-years-old, Wisconsin’s Alyssa Drake has become a nationally-ranked competitive water skier.

The Oconomowoc native said she found skiing at an early age, going out on the lake with her Dad as a baby. By the time she was 10, Drake had competed in Nationals and podiumed on her first try. In eighth grade Drake became homeschooled so she could focus on competitively skiing. The now 18-year-old recently graduated high school and will attend Florida Southern College and be on the Moccasins’ water ski team.
