What To Expect From Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Confirmation Hearings

Here we go again. For the fourth time in five years, the strange rituals of the Supreme Court confirmation process have overtaken the Capitol. In the weeks since U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was formally named as President Joe Biden’s nominee to fill a soon-to-be-vacant spot on the high court, she has been paying courtesy visits to the senators who will vote on her confirmation. Now she’s made it through the gauntlet of private chitchat and is heading into an onslaught of public questions, none of which anyone really expects her to answer.

China Eastern Airlines Plane Crashes With 132 On Board

A Boeing 737-800 owned by China Eastern Airlines crashed in the mountains in southern China's Guangxi region on Monday with 132 people on board, according to AP.

The number of casualties and cause of the crash were not immediately known. China's aviation administration said the 132 people on board included 123 passengers and nine crew members.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Hospitalized With Flu-Like Symptoms

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms, the court said in a statement Sunday.

Thomas, 73, was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, part of the Johns Hopkins Health System, on Friday night, court officials said.

NCAA Swimmer Wants Rule Change After Missing Out On Finals To Lia Thomas

A Virginia Tech swimmer blasted the NCAA over its rule allowing transgender women to compete against biological women after she came up short in a championship qualifying race that was dominated by University of Pennsylvania transgender swimmer Lia Thomas.

“It doesn’t promote our sport in a good way and I think it is disrespectful against the biologically female swimmers who are competing in the NCAA,” Gyorgy said of the rule that has received considerable scrutiny since Thomas has smashed records in her first season competing at the collegiate level as a transgender woman.

Wisconsin Driver Cited Twice For Using Duct Tape On Trailer, State Patrol Says

A driver was cited twice for using duct tape to cover severe cracks on the vehicle's trailer, which State Patrol said was a serious safety concern.

State Patrol said the trooper saw the trailer’s frame was severely cracked and duct tape was used to hide the cracks from view. The trailer had a total gross weight of 14,000 pounds and a crack on the frame was a serious safety concern, State Patrol said.

Milwaukee Mayoral Race Could Mark A Historic Milestone For The City

Milwaukee residents will have a chance to participate in an historic election April 5. For the first time since 2004, there is no incumbent on the ballot.

On the ballot is Bob Donovan, a self-described conservative who served as an alder for many years and acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson. If Johnson wins, he will be the city’s first elected Black mayor.

La Follette Will Seek 12th Term As Secretary Of State

Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug LaFollette has announced he’s seeking a 12th term in office. The Democrat said Thursday that he opposes Republican proposals to give the partisan office oversight of elections.

“Two years ago I might have made a different decision. But now with the integrity of this office at risk, many people have urged me to run for reelection,” LaFollette said.

Evers Backs Boosting Shared Revenue To Help Fund Police

Gov. Tony Evers at a WisPolitics.com luncheon said “hell yes” he could help communities tackle rising crime by helping them get more funding for police through increasing shared revenue even though GOP lawmakers removed his budget proposals to do just that.

Acting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and other city leaders have repeatedly called for more shared revenue funding to help address budgetary issues such as rising pension costs and the need for more police and other emergency services. Evers said he would be happy to help Milwaukee and other municipalities get more shared revenue.

Kalscheur, Iowa State Beat Wisconsin To Reach Sweet 16

Davis, the Big Ten Player of the Year, led Wisconsin with 17 points, and Davison finished with 12. But the Badgers (25-8) shot a season-low 29.8% from the field and turned it over a season-high 17 times.

Wisconsin was leading the nation with an average of 8.4 turnovers per game coming into the day. It was the lowest scoring game for the school since a 53-46 loss to Virginia on Nov. 23, 2018.
