Man Sentenced On Homicide Charges From 2019 Fatal Crash In Burnett County

BURNETT COUNTY -- The Court has sentenced a man on charges stemming from a fatal crash that occurred in Burnett County in 2019.

DrydenWire published a press release from the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office in September 2019 regarding a fatal vehicle crash that resulted in the death of one passenger.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jordan Matrious, of Cameron, WI. One passenger, identified as Matthew Matrious, sustained fatal injuries.

In December 2019, DrydenWire reported that criminal charges of Class B Felony First Degree Reckless Homicide, Class D Felony Second Degree Reckless Homicide, Class D Felony Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle, and Class D Felony Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle with a Prohibited Alcohol Concentration had been filed against Jordan.

Jordan told authorities that he had been drinking alcohol with Matthew, according to the criminal complaint; when the alcohol was gone, they decided to break into a store in Cameron, WI to get more alcohol. Following the theft of the alcohol, they took a vehicle belonging to a family member and began driving to Danbury, WI.

In a separate case filed against Jordan in Barron County Circuit Court he was charged with Class F Felony Burglary-Building or Dwelling, Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property, Misdemeanor Retail Theft - Intentionally Take (<=$500).

The vehicle they were in crashed shortly before 6a on September 15, 2019, on State Road 70 at Clam Lake Drive in Burnett County, WI. Multiple bottles of alcohol were collected from inside the vehicle, some of which were only partly full. An airsoft black pistol was also found inside the vehicle as well as numerous insulin needles on the floor of the vehicle.

Online circuit court records show that at a hearing in September 2020, Jordan entered a plea of Guilty to one charge of Class D Felony  Homicide by Intoxicated Use of Vehicle and a charge of Misdemeanor Possess Marijuana. The remaining charges filed against Jordan were dismissed but read in including two charges of bail jumping filed in a separate Burnett County Circuit Court case.

In October 2020 Jordan entered a plea of Guilty to an amended Barron County Circuit Court charge of Misdemeanor Entry Into a Locked Building, Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property, and Misdemeanor Retail Theft - Intentionally Take (<=$500) with a penalty enhancer for being a party to a crime. Jordan received a withheld sentence with 2 years of probation for those convictions.

At a hearing on January 7, 2021, Jordan appeared for his sentencing in Burnett County Circuit Court. The Court ordered an 8 year Imposed and Stayed sentence with 9 months of conditional jail time and 5 years of probation for his conviction of Class D Felony  Homicide by Intoxicated Use of Vehicle. Should Jordan be revoked from probation he faces 4 years of initial confinement in state prison followed by 4 years of extended supervision.

Conditions of probation will require Jordan to complete a marijuana education course; maintain gainful employment and continued education; undergo an Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment and follow-through; maintain absolute sobriety and comply with regular drug testing; and comply with counseling, treatment, and programming as recommended by the Department of Corrections.
