Man Charged With Burglarizing Property In Burnett County

BURNETT COUNTY -- Charges of Burglary have been filed against a man for a burglary incident occurring in Burnett County late in April of 2020.

The Burnett County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release on April 30, 2020 stating that Calvin Fish, of Fridley, MN, had been apprehended on charges of suspected burglary following an 11-mile vehicle pursuit which turned into a foot pursuit..

On April 29, 2020, a Burnett County Sheriff’s Deputy was checking on a property on Lhotka Rd in Lincoln Township as there had been 2 previous burglaries at the same property. The Deputy discovered that the chain on the gate had been cut and in checking out the property discovered a male individual kneeling by a barn on the property. The man got into a white truck that was also on the property and took off. The Deputy activated the squad car’s emergency lights, however the truck did not stop but instead engaged in an 11-mile vehicle pursuit. At times the truck was traveling at 30 miles an hour over the posted speed limit of 55 mph.

At the intersection of Klarquist Rd. and Hildas Corner Rd. the vehicle slid into the ditch and then into the swamp. The male exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.

The Wisconsin State Patrol Air Unit and Wardens with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources assisted with locating the male, who was taken into custody and identified as Calvin Fish.

Deputies located a title to the truck in the glove box that matched the serial number on the truck and showing that the truck was owned by Calvin Fish.

There were numerous battery operated tools made by Ryobi and Makita in the truck, an angle
grinder, a sawzall, a drill with heavy duty drill bit, and bolt cutters, all of which were identified as possible burglarious tools that could be used in the commission of the burglaries.

The Deputy also located a black Swiss Tech ski mask along with two black hats that were in the truck as well as a spare tire, boat trailer hitch, spare tire, ground blinds, and gas can identified as belonging to someone else.

Deputies sent certain items of evidence from inside the truck to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab for DNA testing.

Fish is charged with Class F Felony Burglary of a Building or Dwelling; Class I Felony Possession of Burglarious Tools; Class I Felony Attempt to Flee an Officer; Class A Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property; and 5 counts of Class A Misdemeanor Theft.

At a hearing on April 30, 2020, the Court placed Fish on a $2,500 cash bond which was posted a few days later. Fish appeared most recently for a preliminary examination hearing on June 12, 2020, at which the Court found probable cause in the criminal complaint that a crime had been committed and that Fish had committed the crime. He is scheduled to appear again in August 2020.

Pursuant to the direction of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as found in Supreme Court Rule 20:3.6, Trial Publicly, you are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
