WASHBURN COUNTY — The second annual Make Music Day Spooner-Shell Lake, a creative, engaging mix of free, public musical events, will occur on Saturday, June 21.
Spooner and Shell Lake will join over 150 cities and towns across the U.S. that will host thousands of Make Music Day events as part of the world’s largest annual music event. They are joining twenty-six other communities large and small across Wisconsin for this celebration of music, held each year to celebrate the longest day of the year. Make Music Day draws people and communities together as it promotes the natural music maker – and music lover – in everyone.
Make Music Day began in France in 1982 and has spread to over 2,000 cities across the globe. Completely different from a typical musical festival, Make Music events are performed by anyone who wants to take part and enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend. Events are free to all participants.
“The Spooner-Shell Lake Intermezzo Music Club is excited to be facilitating this second annual Make Music Day for our cities,” said Mary Hemshrot, Intermezzo president. “Last year’s inaugural event exceeded expectations, and we are delighted to coordinate it again this year.”
A roster of all the events and where they are happening is available here and on Facebook at Make Music Spooner-Shell Lake.
Make Music Day encourages everyone to revel in the joy of music as all manner of locations are turned into impromptu stages where music makers share their passions and where amateur and established artists of all ages and in all genres get a chance to engage new audiences.
The music can range from classical to folk, hip hop to country, gospel to punk rock, brass bands to steel drums. Live music of all kinds will resound on sidewalks, lakes, parks, porches, lawns, libraries, churches, storefronts, businesses, galleries, and other public spaces. Make Music Day encourages performances to take place outside where possible.
“Artists of all kinds including amazing musicians live and work in Northwest Wisconsin,” Hemshrot said. “Shell Lake and Spooner will be destinations for great musical events on Make Music Day.”
Intermezzo Music Club was founded in 1966 to promote local music and support music education. Current activities include annual student-musician auditions for scholarships, an Annual Advent Concert, Christmas caroling at Ladies Night Out, and Make Music Day. Anyone who enjoys music and seeks to help support its development and performance can join.
