SAWYER COUNTY -- Judge John Yackel has ordered a maximum sentence for Jerry Stewart, convicted in Sawyer County Circuit Court of repeatedly sexually assaulting a child.
Jerry Stewart, of Durand, WI (formerly of Waukegan, IL) appeared in Sawyer County Circuit Court on February 16, 2022, for a sentencing hearing regarding a criminal case filed against him in November 2020 that charged him with sexually assaulting a child between the years of 2012 and 2014.
Stewart was originally charged with Class B Felony Repeated Sexual Assault of Same Child (At Least 3 Violations of 1st Degree Sexual Assault). At a hearing in November 2021, the Court accepted a proposed plea agreement which allowed Stewart to plead to an amended charge of Class C Felony Repeated Sexual Assault of Same Child (At Least 3 Violations of 1st or 2nd Degree Sexual Assault).
In October 2020, a forensic interview was conducted with the victim in the case. During the interview, the victim described various situations in which Stewart sexually assaulted the victim between the ages of 8 and 10 on multiple occasions.
At a bail bond hearing in Sawyer County Circuit Court on November 13, 2020, the Court ordered a cash bond of $250,000 for Stewart. Online court records indicate that Stewart remained in custody until his sentencing hearing.

At the sentencing hearing, the Court heard from both District Attorney Poquette and defense counsel for Stewart regarding the plea agreement reached in the matter which recommended a 20-year prison sentence with 10 years of initial confinement followed by 10 years of extended supervision.
The Hon. John Yackel ordered Stewart to serve a 40-year prison sentence with 25 years of initial confinement in state prison followed by 15 years of extended supervision.
Conditions of extended supervision will require Stewart to comply with the sex offender registry program and maintain absolute sobriety. Stewart will be prohibited from having any contact with any child under 18 or any contact with the victim in this case. Stewart will also be required to complete any counseling and programming deemed appropriate by his Department of Corrections agent, and follow through.
