UPDATE: Investigation Into Death Of Cary Elkin Progressing

Stone Lake Area Death Investigation Yields Likely Suspect, Reasonable Motive In Homicide Case.

UPDATE: Investigation Into Death Of Cary Elkin Progressing

SAWYER COUNTY -- The ongoing investigation into the death of Cary Elkin, of Stone Lake, WI, has produced both a likely suspect as well as a reasonable motive in what authorities are investigating as a homicide case.

On April 2, 2021, at 12:26a, Deputies from the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the Stone Lake area regarding a report of a deceased female. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 42-year-old female in the residence deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

On April 6, 2021, authorities issued an updated press release stating that the residence was located on Hungary Lake Lane in the Town of Sand Lake. The Sawyer County Coroner’s Office, according to the press release, identified the deceased female as Cary Lynne Elkin, 42, of Stone Lake, WI.

It has now been over 7 months since authorities last released an update, however, that doesn’t mean the investigation has stalled, in fact, it is progressing.

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office has continued to investigate this case with assistance from Agents of Wisconsin’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin’s State Crime Lab, and several Minnesota law enforcement agencies.

“The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from DCI and Minnesota law enforcement have collaboratively investigated this homicide case through interviews, sharing information, and collecting evidence,” said Sawyer County Sheriff Doug Mrotek to DrydenWire.com. “Due to the complexity of this case, with search warrants and pending evidence during the investigation, it has extended the timeline to completion.”

The Sheriff says that through the investigation they have determined a likely suspect and that there “appears to be a reasonable motive for the homicide,” however, Mrotek stated that that information is not being released at this time due to the additional follow-up still required and that releasing that information “could also give the suspect an advantage regarding any further future investigation.” The Sheriff’s Office is also awaiting results from the State Crime Lab which is still processing evidence related to the death investigation, according to the Sheriff.

Sheriff Mrotek added that maintaining the confidential nature of the evidence and information that has been compiled regarding this case is essential to protecting the integrity of the investigation. “Therefore as much as we would like to release additional information, our focus is receiving an arrest warrant from our District Attorney, having the suspect prosecuted, and having justice served. Once an arrest warrant is issued for our suspect, we will be completing a press release for distribution.”

Sheriff Mrotek reiterated that this is believed to be an isolated incident and that the community is not at risk.
