SPOONER, WI -- You are invited to help celebrate, preserve, and share our local history with objects! We invite you to attend our History Talk + Workshop on Saturday, April 29th, from 3-5 pm at the Spooner Memorial Library. We hope that this event will help to bring our community together to reflect on our local histories and learn more about the histories of Wisconsinites throughout our beautiful state.
The event will start with the Badger Talk presentation “Wisconsin 101: Doing Local History with Objects” by Tom Broman, Professor Emeritus. Broman is co-director of Wisconsin 101, a state-wide public history project for public engagement.
Following his talk, there will be a history harvest workshop. A history harvest is an event to collect and preserve the histories of the local community. We invite the attendees to bring in historical/meaningful objects and share stories about them, which will be preserved and shared via photography and audio recording. During the event, we will enjoy refreshments, share our stories, engage in conversation, and learn a bit about other folks in our community. After the event, we will post the stories online so that the whole community can engage with all of the stories that were shared.
If you are worried that you don't have an object that is "historically significant" we challenge you to see yourself as a part of history. We are all history in the making! At our last history harvest, folks brought in objects including an heirloom ornament, a clay sculpture, a newspaper clipping about a beard competition, arrowheads, fossils, an unidentified metal ball, and doorbells from the old Trego Mercantile. These are all historical treasures, and they help us see how we connect to the people and places around us.
