SAWYER COUNTY -- The Court has sentenced a Hayward, WI, man on charges in a case that was filed against him after he allegedly stole $50.00 at knifepoint from someone outside the Hayward Family Dollar store.
DrydenWire published a post in December 2020, regarding the incident that allegedly occurred outside the Hayward, WI Family Dollar store on November 8, 2020. Sawyer County Dispatch received a report from an individual who stated that they had just been robbed at knifepoint in the parking lot of the store. Law Enforcement conducted an investigation which led them to Carlos D. Smith, of Hayward, WI, as the suspect. When Smith was taken into custody, Law Enforcement found cash on his person in the same denominations as described by the person who reported the theft, and they also found a glass smoking device that tested positive for methamphetamine.
Smith was charged with Class C Felony Armed Robbery with Threat of Force; Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct; and Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia. After numerous hearings, Smith’s court case was scheduled for a Jury Trial on November 18, 2021.
Online circuit court records show that Smith appeared most recently on November 16, 2021, for a court hearing regarding his criminal charges. Smith changed his plea to No Contest on his charges of Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct; and Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia and the Court accepted his plea. Smith’s charge of Class C Felony Armed Robbery with Threat of Force was dismissed.
The Court ordered withheld sentences on each of Smith’s convictions with 1 year of probation for each conviction.
Conditions of probation will require Smith to obtain a valid driver license; complete any counseling and programming deemed appropriate by his Department of Corrections agent, and follow through; complete an Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment within 45 days and follow-through with recommendations; and pay fines and costs in excess of $1,000.
