Governor Evers Approves US 63 Improvements In Washburn County

WASHBURN COUNTY -- To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Governor Evers signed a $4 million contract to improve US 63 between Shell Lake and US 53, in the cities of Shell Lake and Spooner, and in the towns of Beaver Brook and Spooner. Work is scheduled to begin in early August 2019.

Monarch Paving is the prime contractor for the project. Construction will begin at the intersection of County B in Shell Lake and continue north to Greenwood Avenue in Spooner. Construction also will occur north of the city of Spooner, starting at Poplar Avenue and continuing to the US 53 interchange.

Crews will perform the following work during the project:

  • Asphalt pavement resurfacing
  • Widening US 53 from Durabilt Road to Veterans Memorial Park in the City of Spooner and installing a two-way left turn lane along the segment
  • Rehabilitation or replacement of culverts and beam guard
  • Installation of rumble strips on the shoulders and centerline in rural areas

During construction, US 63 will be open to traffic. Drivers can expect daytime-only flagging operations, which will reduce traffic to a single lane through the active construction zones.

Construction is scheduled for completion by October 2019. The schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress. This construction project does not include the reconstruction of US 63 through downtown Spooner, currently scheduled for 2021.
