PRICE COUNTY -- On Sunday, Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chequamegon High School will host the annual Men’s Health and Sport Expo, sponsored by the Flambeau Hospital Foundation. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. A variety of booths related to all-season outdoor pursuits and favorite pastimes will intermix with popular health screens aimed at catching health concerns before they become problems.
Former Wisconsin Governor Marty Schreiber will share his personal account of becoming a caregiver to his wife, Elaine, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 11 years ago. In his poignant presentation, Schreiber relays an experience becoming more commonplace in aging counties like Price, where over 25 percent of its population are seniors over the age of 65, according to the latest U.S. Census. The Alzheimer’s Association reports someone develops the disease every 65 seconds in the United States, and 16.1 million American family members and friends take up the caregiving charge. With statistics like these, Schreiber’s story provides hope and compassion for the quickly growing numbers of people on either side of the caregiving role.
Schreiber will share his love story, which spans more than 60 years, referring to the woman with whom he fell in love in high school, married, raised a family and ran political campaigns as his first Elaine, and today’s sweet, sensitive woman who remembers nothing about their past as his second. He speaks about the need for caregivers to build support systems and self-care, which are among the things he failed to do early on.
His account is also shared in his book, My Two Elaines, which will be given free to the first 250 attendees of his 1 p.m. presentation.
Flambeau Home Health and Hospice’s new medical director, Dr. Raj Hiranandani, will continue the caregiving discussion at 2 p.m. highlighting resources available to caregivers who support loved ones nearing the end of their life.
Come for the presentations; stay for the booths! Booths will include information on areas of interest like taxidermy, outdoor photography, and utility vehicles, as well as provide and share services offered by local businesses and government offices. Flambeau Hospital and Marshfield Clinic staff, along with area providers including Northlakes Community Clinic, Hearing Advantage and the Phillips Lions Club, will provide free health screenings for spirometry (lung capacity), bone health, posture and balance, prostrate function, hearing, vision, spine, dental health and more. Cooking demonstrations will run all day.
