The jury in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has reached a verdict on its second day of deliberations. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
The jury - made up of six White people, four Black people and two biracial people - deliberated for approximately 10 hours in total. The seven women and five men began deliberating Monday after three weeks of witness testimony.
On Tuesday afternoon, the jury announced the following verdicts:
- Second-Degree Murder: Guilty
- Third-Degree Murder: Guilty
- Second-Degree Manslaughter: Guilty
Under Minnesota law, Derek Chauvin can appeal his conviction after the court enters the judgment and he receives his sentence, which the Judge in this case has said will take place in 8 weeks.
