In an effort to raise awareness and money for the world’s most common cause of cancer death in women, the Cumberland Volleyball team wore pink at their last home match because the month of October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The “Dig for the Cure” campaign was originally started in 2003 by Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston, whose mother was a breast cancer survivor, and has spread to volleyball programs across the country in recent years.
The Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure and Dig for the Cure, the foundation has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill the promise of becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
The volleyball team sold shirts to raise money this year. The initials on the back of the tshirt represent individuals close to CHS Volleyball players. They are currently fighting, have survived or been taken by cancer. It is not only important to remember these people, but all who are currently fighting, have survived or have been taken. This money raised by this Dig for a Cure event will go directly to patients at the Cumberland Healthcare facility.
If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, please contact Mrs. Olson at jolso@csdmail.com by Friday, October 7th at noon.
