BARRON COUNTY -- Local watershed councils, NWWG Network and UW-Extension invite you to a jointly sponsored field day to be held on Saturday, August 24 beginning at 10:00AM.
Hosts Logan and Amber Dwyer have a diversified crop and cattle operation on about 250 acres south of Rice Lake and about 5 miles west of Chetek. The Dwyers have been on their farm for only three years and enjoy trying new ideas with cover crops while improving soil health and maintaining profitability.
Come and learn about relay cover crops with soybeans and winter wheat, cover crops interseeded between 60 inch rows of corn and soybeans, corn planted with a 5 way mix of cover crops interseeded between the rows, and forage production for beef cows provided by a multi-species (13 way) cover crop mix. Some of the cover crops grown in mixes include cereal rye, annual rye grass, Berseem clover, kale, turnip, buckwheat, vetch, field radish and several more. Soil heath measurements will be demonstrated and cover crop economics will be discussed along with other topics. Also we will be answering any and all questions from field day participants.
The 75 head Angus-cross beef herd economically harvest the annual forage cover crops and are considered just another year in the Dwyer’s crop rotation. Come see the low cost cattle handling facility, underground water lines, portable watering cart, and discuss their fencing system among other cattle topics.
A free lunch at noon will be provided by our local watershed councils, highlighted by fresh garden vegetables and beef BBQ. Staying for lunch will provide an opportunity to network with your fellow producers following the field day.
The farm is located at 1842 8th Avenue in Barron County. From Hwy 8, east of Barron, take Co. Hwy O south for about 5 miles and turn left onto 8th Avenue going east, continue less than a half mile until reaching their farmstead on the left. Watch for the signs and a big red shed.
