BARRON COUNTY -- The Court has sentenced Steven Nunemaker, formerly of Almena, WI, for convictions of child enticement and exposing genitals in a criminal case that was filed against him in 2020.
On December 16, 2020, the Turtle Lake Police Department received information that Steven Nunemaker had sexually assaulted a child under the age of 13. Officers were advised that when confronted, Nunemaker had admitted to some of the allegations.
A criminal complaint was filed against Nunemaker on December 18, 2020, and states that when interviewed by law enforcement, he said that he knew why the Officer was there and that “there is a situation that has arisen, that I regret that I don’t fully understand it myself”.
Nunemaker went on to admit to showering together with the child; laying with the child under a blanket while naked; and bathing the child’s private parts. Nunemaker also stated that on several occasions he involved himself when the child went to the bathroom so that he could “help” the child use the toilet. When asked by the Officer, Nunemaker initially denied experiencing any sexual gratification or arousal during these times, however later stated that he was a bad person and admitted to experiencing some kind of arousal.
The criminal complaint states that the child victim was interviewed and contains many details from that interview that are too graphic to include in this post.
At a bail hearing on December 18, 2020, the Court ordered a $5,000 cash bond for Nunemaker which was later adjusted to $2,500 cash at a hearing on December 30, 2020. The adjusted bond was posted a few laters.
Nunemaker was initially charged with Class B Felony 1st Degree Child Sexual Assault. If convicted as charged, Nunemaker would have faced a maximum sentence of 60 years confinement in state prison. Additional charges were later added, including Class D Felony Child Enticement-Sexual Contact; Class D Felony Child Enticement-Expose Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts; and two counts of Class I Felony Exposing Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts to a Child.
Online circuit court records show that the case filed against Nunemaker was scheduled for a jury trial on November 17, 2021, however, at a hearing on November 12, 2021, the Court accepted Nunemaker’s pleas of Guilty to Class D Felony Child Enticement-Sexual Contact with a possible maximum penalty of 25 years of confinement in state prison; and two counts of Class I Felony Exposing Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts to a Child with a maximum possible penalty of 3 years and 6 months confinement in state prison. The remaining charges against Nunemaker were dismissed but read-in.
Nunemaker appeared recently for a sentencing hearing in Barron County Circuit Court. Online court records show that defense counsel for Nunemaker advised the Court that Nunemaker had intended to enter a Guilty Plea to his charge of Class D Felony Child Enticement-Expose Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts, not to: Class D Felony Child Enticement-Sexual Contact. The Court granted his defense counsel’s request to amend the judgment of conviction and online court records indicate that the statutory penalties are the same.
The Hon. J.M. Bitney ordered Nunemaker to serve a 16-year prison sentence on his conviction of Class D Felony Child Enticement-Expose Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts; with 8 years of initial confinement, followed by 8 years of extended supervision.
Nunemaker received a 5-year prison sentence on one of his convictions for Class I Felony Exposing Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts to a Child. The Court ordered that he should serve that sentence consecutively to his 16-year sentence. Nunemaker will serve 18 months of initial confinement followed by 2 years of extended supervision.
The Court ordered another 5-year prison sentence on Nunemaker’s second conviction for Class I Felony Exposing Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts to a Child, with 18 months of initial confinement in state prison followed by 2 years of extended supervision. He will serve this sentence concurrently with his other two sentences.
In total, Nunemaker is ordered to serve 9 years and 6 months of initial confinement in state prison, with 10 years of extended supervision to follow.
Nunemaker will be required to register with the sex offender registry. Conditions of extended supervision will also require Nunemaker to complete any and all evaluations, counseling, treatment, and follow-up recommended by Probation Agent. Nunemaker is prohibited from having any contact with the victim in this case, or any unsupervised contact with juvenile females under the age of 16. Nunemaker is also prohibited from viewing any pornographic websites on the internet.
