HAYWARD, WI -- (DrydenWire.com) -- The Court has sentenced a man on convictions stemming from a heroin investigation in Sawyer County.
DrydenWire previously reported that Devlin Cotton and Brian Cotton were arrested in April 2020, following a vehicle pursuit relating to an investigation into heroin trafficking in Sawyer County. Investigators allegedly learned through multiple sources of information that the two men were utilizing rental vehicles when traveling.
On April 3, 2020, Law Enforcement attempted to make a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle as it traveled north on State Hwy 27 near the Rusk/Sawyer County line. The suspect vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit started northbound on State Hwy 27. During the pursuit, assisting officers deployed tire deflation devices deflating two of the suspect vehicle tires. The vehicle came to a stop on Highway 27 near the intersection of Townline Road. Both suspects were taken into custody without further incident.

The Wisconsin State Patrol, US Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office all provided assistance to the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
Devlin was charged with Class E Felony Conspiracy to Commit Manufacture or Delivery of Heroin(>3-10g), Second and Subsequent Offense; Class G Felony 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety; Class I Felony Vehicle Operator Flee or Elude Officer; Class I Felony Possession of Cocaine/Coca(2nd+ Offense), as a Party to a Crime; Class I Felony Possession of THC (2nd+ Offense) as a Party to a Crime; and Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia, as a Party to a Crime.

Online circuit court records show that Devlin appeared most recently on January 13, 2022, for a sentencing hearing on his conviction of Class G Felony - 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety. The Court ordered a 4-year prison sentence with 2 years of initial confinement followed by 2 years of extended supervision.
Devlin will be required to undergo an Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment and follow through. The Court also ordered Devlin to pay fines and costs of $654.00. Devin will be eligible for the Challenge Incarceration and Substance Abuse Programs and he received credit for 5 days served in confinement.
At a plea hearing in June 2021, all other charges filed against Devlin were dismissed but read in.

Brian Cotton received charges of Class I Felony Falsely Present Non Controlled Substance, as a Party to a Crime; Class E Felony Conspiracy to Commit Manufacture/Deliver Heroin(>3-10g); Class I Felony Possession of Narcotic Drugs, as a Party to a Crime; Class I Felony Possession of THC (2nd+ Offense) as a Party to a Crime; and Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia as a Party to a Crime following the traffic stop.
Online circuit court records show that the charges against Brian were dismissed in May 2021. Details of the reason for dismissal were not included in online records.
