BURNETT COUNTY -- A Grantsburg, WI man has been sentenced on multiple convictions including sexual assault and invading privacy by using a hidden camera to capture videos of children while they were showering.
DrydenWire.com reported in January 2020, that Johnny Massey, Jr., Grantsburg, WI, was facing numerous criminal charges following an investigation that revealed that he had used hidden cameras to capture videos of children while they were showering.
Law enforcement received information that multiple videos of children showering had been discovered on Massey’s cell phone. When confronted about the videos, Massey offered $10,000 to the individual who had found the cell phone. Massey’s face could be seen in at least one of the videos, according to the criminal complaint, and the videos were recorded with hidden cameras placed by Massey.
Massey was charged with two counts of Class F Felony Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Repeater; two counts of Class I Felony Invasion of Privacy - Surveillance Device (Victim Under Age 18, Repeater); two counts of Class I Felony Post or Publish a Depiction of Person Without Consent - Victim Under Age 18, Repeater; and two counts of Class I Felony Possession of Child Pornography, Repeater.
A second criminal case was filed against Massey in March 2020 in Burnett County Circuit Court charging him with Class C Felony 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of Child, Class G Felony 3rd Degree Sexual Assault, and Class F Felony Causing Mental Harm to Child. At a hearing on March 25, 2021, the Court sentenced Massey on convictions for 3rd-degree sexual assault, Invasion of Privacy - Surveillance Device, Post or Publish a Depiction of Person Without Consent. The remaining charges filed against Massey were dismissed at a hearing in September 2020, with some of them being read in for consideration in sentencing.
The Court ordered an 18-year sentence for Massey with 8 years of initial confinement in state prison followed by 10 years of extended supervision. Massey received credit for 462 days already served in confinement.
Conditions of supervision will require Massey to maintain absolute sobriety. Massey will be prohibited from having any contact with children under the age of 18, including his own children, without the approval of a Department of Corrections Parole Agent.
The Court also ordered Massey to undergo a sex offender treatment program, AODA treatment program, and any other treatment programming recommended by his agent. Massey will be prohibited from possessing any type of camera or surveillance equipment; any cell phone with internet or smartphone capabilities; and he will not be allowed to utilize the internet or social media without approval from his agent.
Massey will also be required to register for life as a sex offender.
Pursuant to the direction of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as found in Supreme Court Rule 20:3.6, Trial Publicly, you are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
