SAWYER COUNTY -- The Court has sentenced two of three people charged criminally following a 2020 burglary of the Black Iron Bar & Grill in Sawyer County.
In October 2020, the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office assisted by the City of Hayward Police and the LCO Police Department responded to a 911 call of a burglary in progress at the Black Iron Bar and Grill located on State Highway 77 in the Town of Spider Lake.
Responding Deputies learned that there were possibly two suspects wearing masks attempting to break into the bar; the suspects fled into a wooded area. Deputies were able to acquire the identities of the two suspects that fled which led to their apprehension.
Larry J. Rush, Steven G. Martin, and Vicki A. Hirtreiter were all arrested in relation to the burglary investigation, and charges were filed against all three.
Online circuit court records show that Rush received charges in Sawyer County Circuit Court for Class F Felony Attempted Burglary to Building or Dwelling, Party to a Crime; Class I Felony Possession of Burglarious Tools; Class I Felony Possession of Methamphetamine; Misdemeanor Carrying a Concealed Weapon; Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property; and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
A second case was also filed against Rush in Sawyer County in October 2020 charging him with Class F Felony Burglary-Building or Dwelling and Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property.
Larry Rush
Rush appeared most recently on February 10, 2022, for a hearing in Sawyer County Circuit Court regarding his charges there. The Court accepted his pleas of guilty on two charges of Burglary to Building or Dwelling. The remaining charges filed against him were dismissed but read in.
The Court ordered a 7-year prison sentence on one conviction of Burglary to Building or Dwelling and a 5-year and 6-month prison sentence on the second conviction of Burglary to Building or Dwelling. Rush will serve the two sentences concurrently with 3 years of initial confinement followed by a total of 4 years of extended supervision. Conditions of supervision will require Rush to undergo an Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment within 45 days and follow through with recommendations. He will also be required to pay over $1,200 in costs and fees.
Rush has additional charges for burglary, theft, and receiving stolen property pending against him in Iron County Circuit Court and Ashland County Circuit Court, according to online circuit court records.
Steven Martin
Steven G. Martin also received charges of Class F Felony Attempt Burglary to Building or Dwelling; Class I Felony Possession of Burglarious Tools; Class I Felony Possession of Methamphetamine; Misdemeanor Carrying a Concealed Weapon; Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property; Misdemeanor Theft; and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in Sawyer County Circuit Court.
Online circuit court records show that in July 2021 Martin appeared on his charges and the Court accepted his plea of No Contest to his charges of Class F Felony Attempt Burglary to Building or Dwelling; Class I Felony Possession of Methamphetamine; and Misdemeanor Theft. The remaining charges against Martin were dismissed but read in.
The Court ordered withheld sentences for Martin on all three convictions, with 4 years of probation on the burglary conviction, 3 years of probation on the methamphetamine conviction, and 1 year of probation on the theft conviction. Martin is to serve all of the probation concurrently. Conditions of probation will require Martin to complete an AODA assessment and any counseling and programming deemed appropriate by his Department of Corrections agent, and follow through with recommendations.
Martin was also convicted in July 2021 of Class I Felony Theft in Iron County (with a sentence of 1 year of probation, 25 days confinement in county jail, $1,000 restitution); Class F Felony Burglary, Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property, and Misdemeanor Theft in Ashland County (with a sentence of 4 years of probation, 60 days confinement in county jail); and Misdemeanor Battery in Outagamie County (with a sentence of 1 year probation); and of Misdemeanor Criminal Trespass to Dwelling in Marinette County in November 2021 (with a sentence of 30 day confinement in county jail). The crimes charged in these additional cases all occurred on incident dates between August 2020 and November 2020 according to online circuit court records.
Vicki Hirtreiter
Following the burglary of the Black Iron Bar & Grill in Sawyer County, Vicki Hirtreiter was also arrested and charged in Sawyer County Circuit Court with Class F Felony Attempted Burglary to Building or Dwelling, Party to a Crime; Class I Felony; and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She is scheduled to appear again in March 2022 regarding her Sawyer County charges.
A separate case was filed against Hirtreiter in May 2021 in Price County Circuit Court charging her with Class H Felony Bail Jumping; Misdemeanor Bail Jumping; and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Details of that case are not known to DrydenWire at the time of this post, but she is scheduled to appear for a hearing in February 2022 regarding that case.
