Court Orders Inpatient Treatment For Man Charged Following High Speed Pursuit

WASHBURN COUNTY -- The Court has found Jason Arnold not competent to stand trial for his felony charges in Washburn County stemming from a high speed pursuit he was involved in; and has ordered Arnold to undergo a term of inpatient treatment at a Wisconsin State Mental Health Institution.

DrydenWire.com reported previously that Jason Arnold, of Exeland, WI, had been arrested and charged following an incident that occurred in July 2020 during which Arnold led Officers on a high speed chase beginning in Sawyer County and ending in Washburn County where he was taken into custody.

During the high speed chase Arnold drove the wrong way on a highway, travelled through a hay field, and ultimately collided head on with a Sheriff’s Office squad vehicle which was positioned between Arnold and a nearby residence.

Arnold is charged with 2 counts of Class F Felony First Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Class H Felony Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer, Class I Felony Reckless Driving Causing Great Bodily Harm, and Class I Felony Attempting to Flee or Elude an Officer along with non-criminal traffic citations charging him with Illegal Crossing of Divided Highway, Hit and Run-Property Adjacent to Highway, Operate after Rev/Susp of Registration, Speeding on Expressway (35+ MPH), Driving Wrong Way on Divided Highway, and Failure to Obey Traffic Officer/Signal.

At a competency hearing on August 25, 2020, the Court heard testimony from Arnold himself along with other witnesses. The Court found that Arnold is not competent to stand trial on his criminal charges at this time, and according to online circuit court records, issued an Order of Commitment for Arnold to undergo inpatient treatment. Details regarding the term of commitment for Arnold were not listed in online circuit court records at the time of this post.
