SAWYER COUNTY -- The Court has accepted a change of plea regarding meth charges that were filed against Daniel D. Cousins, of Hayward, WI, in April 2020 following the execution of a search warrant.
Charges were filed against Cousins after a search warrant was executed resulting in the discovery of 15 grams of methamphetamine, one digital scale, multiple items of drug paraphernalia, and firearms, according to a press release from Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office.
Cousins was charged with Class D Felony Possess w/ Intent-Amphetamine(>10-50g), Second and Subsequent Offense, according to online circuit court records. Additional charges were later filed against Cousins in separate Sawyer County Circuit Court cases including Class H Felony Bail Jumping, Misdemeanor Receiving or Concealing Stolen Property, Misdemeanor Theft of Movable Property, Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor Possess Amphetamine, and Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct.
A jury trial was scheduled for April 29, 2022, regarding some of Cousin’s criminal charges, however, online court records show that the trial was recently taken off the calendar, and Cousins instead appeared for a plea and sentencing hearing on April 29, 2022.
The Hon. Angeline Winton accepted a 3-year Deferred Entry of Judgment Agreement regarding Cousins’ charge of Class D Felony Possess w/ Intent-Amphetamine(>10-50g), Second and Subsequent Offense. Details of the agreement’s requirements were not listed in online court records at the time of this post, however, if Cousins successfully completes the agreement, he will be eligible for a dismissal of that charge.
Cousins also entered pleas of Guilty to charges of Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor Possess Amphetamine, Misdemeanor Bail Jumping, and Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct, and a plea of No Contest to a charge of Misdemeanor Receiving or Concealing Stolen Property.
Judge Winton accepted Cousins’ plea, found him guilty, and ordered 3 years of probation for Cousins on each of his misdemeanor convictions, to be served concurrently with 30 days of conditional jail time. Conditions of probation will require Cousins to maintain absolute sobriety and complete an alcohol and other drug assessment as well as any programming deemed appropriate by a Department of Corrections agent.
