UPDATE: Chief Updates Community On ATV Operation On Spooner Streets

**UPDATE** Per Spooner Police Department.

In my attempt to clarify certain issues regarding ATV and UTV use, it looks like I have created more confusion. To clarify, operators of ATV s on Spooner City streets must possess a current ATV safety certification and have it with them while operating the machine, if they were born after January 1, 1988. Those between the ages of 12 and 15 are also required to have adult supervision. All persons under the age of 18 are required to wear helmets. I have spoken to the Spooner DNR station and they have pamphlets available and we will be getting pamphlets from them today and will have them available in the lobby, at the Spooner Police Department. I would suggest you pick up a pamphlet to better educate yourself, as I am unable to post the entire pamphlet and have only addressed some of the issues that have been in question.

SPOONER, WI -- There has been some confusion recently regarding ATV/UTV routes in the City of Spooner.  Spooner Police Chief Jerry Christman clears things up in a news release posted on the Spooner Police Department's Facebook page.

News Release

ATV / UTV OPERATION ON SPOONER CITY STREETS/ ROUTES

There has been some confusion, both for riders and Law Enforcement regarding this new topic. In 2019 the City of Spooner made some changes to ATV/ UTV routes in the City of Spooner.

It is now legal for these machines to operate on all City streets, with the exception of Hwy 63, Hwy 70, Hwy 53 and Walnut St. Signs are posted at the entrance to the city on streets and the Wild River Trail system. Operators are restricted to 15 MPH on permitted streets.

There has been some discussion and confusion as to the age that persons can legally operate these machines on city streets, which are considered ATV Routes. To operate on an ATV Route, the driver must be 16 years of age or older and possess a current ATV safety certificate. These operators must wear a safety helmet and adhere to rules of the road, such as obeying stop sign, use of turn signals and operating to the right of the center line, as some examples. ATV and UTV must have lights activated while operating on city streets.

Operators of ATV between the ages of 12 and 15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and have a valid ATV operator certificate, from Wisconsin or another state or Province in their possession, while operating on a designated ATV route. This would mean operating on our city streets, which are designated ATV routes.

The DNR has pamphlets available, regarding the legal requirements for operating on roadways/ routes and trails.

The hope and intent of this post is to inform people, enjoying our area, on ATVs/ UTVs and to help keep both motorists and ATV users safe and compliant with state and local laws.

Per Chief Jerry Christman
