Beef on Oak Savanna Pasture Walk, Clayton, Saturday, August 11, 10AM
The NW Wisconsin Graziers Network and UW-Extension invite you to our August pasture walk of the 2018 grazing season. Host Jonathan Chaplin operates the “Busted Knuckle Ranch” of about 120 acres southeast of Clayton on 5th Avenue. Come see the new fencing and water systems put in with cost share funding and grazing planning through NRCS. Out wintering beef cattle, fall manure spreading and direct marketing of grass fed beef will be discussed along with other topics. Also we will be answering any and all questions from pasture walk participants.
Jonathan rotationally grazes about 20 head of crossbred Angus and Herford beef cattle on about 30 acres of oak savanna pastures. These silvopastures have been developed over several years and required extensive brush and weed control by removing invasive species and managed grazing. Highly variable soil types have been particularly challenging along with wet soils in springtime.
Jonathan has established new pastures with mixed legume and grass species for his forage program. Other projects include wetland restoration, a river crossing and development of wildlife habitat. He is currently renting out some cropland and experimenting with non-herbicide weed control in his underutilized pastures.
The farm is located at 34 5th Avenue, Clayton, WI. From Clayton take Co. Hwy D southeast about 2 miles, turn right or south on Countyline Road, go 2 miles then left or east on 5th Avenue, farm is 1/3 mile on left. Watch for the signs.
