As snow continues to pileup across Wisconsin, We Energies is strongly encouraging customers to stay safe by continuing to clear any snow or ice from natural gas meters and appliance vents around their homes. Customers are also asked to clear icicles or ice dams from above meters that can fall and damage the equipment.
According to the National Weather Service, more than 20 inches of snow have fallen this month across central and western Wisconsin. We Energies crews are finding natural gas meters buried or covered in snow. The snow and ice can damage the meters and create potentially dangerous situations.
Crews are also finding natural gas appliance vents blocked by snow piles. Blocked vents can trap carbon monoxide indoors. Customers should move snow away from those vents and make sure they are clear of any obstructions.
Ensuring meter safety
Keeping meters clear of snow and ice allows for safer operation for you and access for us to service meters in case of emergency. If snow piles up, remember these tips:
- Keep meters clear of snow and ice
- Use a brush to gently remove snow from meters
- Be careful not to bury a meter when using a snow thrower or shovel
- Remove icicles that may drip water on a natural gas meter and interfere with flow
